Department Description

The Finance Department of the University encompasses the Controller's Office and the Office of Budget, Treasury and Research Administration. These offices are dedicated to ensuring the integrity of data submitted, recorded and reported and to providing the highest level of financial services in support of the University's mission in Biomedical Research.

Detailed Description

Reporting to both the Assistant Controller and Associate Controller, the Staff Accountant will be responsible for supporting the Controller's Office in a broad range of activities. Responsibilities include preparing monthly bank reconciliations for several bank accounts, making and preparing all periodic bank deposits, and working with various individuals within the Finance Office to obtain the appropriate general ledger coding for all receipts to ensure appropriate recordings. The Accountant will assist the Assistant Controller in monitoring and tagging all new equipment additions for the University on a quarterly basis, maintaining files on Inventors and disbursing royalty payments when required, and preparing an annual reconciliation and analysis of royalty activity for the Controller. The Accountant will prepare invoices and processing payments related to various internal and external users of the University's services, create various monthly reports and annual reconciliations of activity related to various internal and external users of the University's services, monitor various balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis, review payroll and operating bank accounts for abandoned property issues, and send standard notification letters. Will stop payments and reissue checks as necessary. May be responsible for special projects and analyses as assigned by management.

Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance required and a minimum of two years of accounting or related experience required. Must have strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills, and be hands-on, self-starting, disciplined, and detailed orientated with the ability to work independently. Must have a strong understanding of proper accounting treatment for accounts receivable transactions and other activities. Experience with written and verbal internal and external customer communications, as well as experience with journal entries and general ledger reconciliation, required. Must have a high degree of proficiency with Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
