The Development Program provides in excess of $50 million in private support annually toward the mission of The Rockefeller University, which is to improve the understanding of life for the benefit of humanity. Working with the Board of Trustees and volunteer groups including The Rockefeller University Council, the Committee on Trust and Estate Plans, and the Women and Science and Parents and Science Initiatives, the Development Office oversees all private fund-raising at the University, including annual, capital, and endowment campaigns.
Reporting to the Director of Research & Prospect Management, the Assistant Director will provide the Development Office (DO) staff and other University personnel with high-quality research and related documents on prospects for donor solicitations, events organized by the Development Office, meetings with Development Office staff, the President or other University representatives, Nominating Committee meetings, and various strategic planning and fundraising initiatives. The Assistant Director, Development Research will focus particular attention on the identification, research, and tracking of individual, corporate, and foundation prospects, and directly supports the fundraising efforts for all the groups of the DO. Responsibilities include identifying and qualifying prospective individual, corporate and foundation donors capable of significant financial support, conducting biographical and financial research on donors utilizing in-house resources and a variety of on-line and printed sources, writing confidential research profiles on both individual and institutional donors for strategy planning and for briefings for DO and University events and meetings, developing strategic recommendations about prospect and donor cultivation, solicitations, and long-term relationship management, providing a daily e-mail for the DO with links and summaries of pertinent news items, locating and sending important articles of interest that appear throughout the workday to staff, and maintaining the Research Group's responsibilities for inputting data and documents into CRM and SmartSearch databases. Will maintain knowledge of prospect research tools and subscriptions used in the field, and investigate new product offerings.
Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred. Must have a minimum of 3 to 5 years of work experience with prospect/donor research in the non-profit fundraising field. Knowledge of prospect development principles and methods, as well as familiarity with prospect research resources such as analyzing SEC filings, IRS 990s and NEXIS search results necessary. Must possess demonstrated ability to develop proactive prospecting methodologies to support organizational goals, synthesize complex information from multiple sources and present in accessible summarized form, and have proven writing skills with the ability to successfully write and edit professional fundraising documents. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well as solid organizational skills, required. Must possess the ability to work productively and independently in a fast-paced environment, along with the ability to prioritize a multi-faceted workload under strict deadlines, and with attentiveness to detail and accuracy in data entry, reporting, fact finding, and writing. Excellent computer skills specifically with internet search engines and advanced search techniques, fundraising software, data retrieval services (e.g. LexisNexis, Foundation Directory, iWave, Relationship Science, etc.), MS Office (Word and Excel, in particular) and Adobe Acrobat necessary.
