Department Description

Plant Operations offers comprehensive services at The Rockefeller University including a full range of building trades services which are responsible for routine maintenance and minor/major space alterations, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC, grounds maintenance, locksmith, custodial, moving and setup services.

Detailed Description

Under the supervision of the Supervisor of Custodial Services, the Assistant Supervisor will oversee a variety of cleaning and moving tasks that maintain a safe and clean University campus. Will be responsible for supervising night shift movers and cleaners, inspecting and reporting equipment for any needed repair or cleaning, and training personnel in use of equipment and University procedures. Will supervise the custodial team for set-up of public spaces for various campus events, work closely with outside waste hauler and other outside vendors to facilitate their functions on campus, and instruct and supervise contractors as to their project work. Will follow all safety rules as laid out by the University and Plant Operations department and train new employees in proper custodial procedures for the use of manually operated tools, electrically-powered machines, cleaning compounds, solvents and chemicals. Responsible for event and meeting set up and break down, snow removal using plow, snow blower or shovel, and emergency response including extreme weather conditions.

Job Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent required. Must have at least 5 years of experience in custodial services, including previous supervisory experience and knowledge of cleaning procedures, equipment and supplies. Experience in a hospital or academic environment preferred. Must have supervisory skills, management skills such as planning and organizing, strong oral and written communication skills, and the ability to train new employees. General mechanical or technical aptitude and specific knowledge and experience in a skill, craft, or trade preferred. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required. Must be able to troubleshoot unpredictable situations and have the ability to stay calm under pressure and maintain a professional demeanor at all times. Strong interpersonal skills required. Fluency in Spanish highly desired.

Additional Details

Must be able to inspect the cleanliness of facilities and areas that may only be accessible by climbing ladders or stairs, bending, reaching on top of partitions, cabinets, bookcases and ledges, moving furniture, supplies, or equipment. Must be able to move throughout assigned areas, as work is performed indoors and out-of-doors. Must be able to lift and carry custodial supplies and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis. Must have a full range of physical motion in order to operate manual and electrically-powered cleaning equipment and machines to include snow shovels. Will be designated as an essential employee and must report to work as scheduled when University offices and laboratories are limited due to severe weather.
