Situated on 1,200 acres in Dutchess County, New York, about 80 miles north of the Rockefeller University campus, the Center for Field Research in Ethology and Ecology provides a setting for studying various organisms living under natural or seminatural conditions. The center has facilities for breeding and keeping animals indoors so that field and laboratory observations can be conducted in parallel. It currently supports a breeding program for the development of transgenic songbirds and field studies of ants. Past research has covered diverse topics, such as echolocation in bats, the incidence of stress in natural populations of animals, perceptual cues used during nocturnal migration, the biology of vocal learning in birds and the production of replacement brain cells in adult free-ranging animals. Equipment and facilities are available for descriptive and analytical research under both field and laboratory conditions.
The Field Research Center Manager will oversee the daily operations, buildings and grounds maintenance, and support of the bird-keeping program and research projects at the Field Research Center in Millbrook, NY. Administrative responsibilities will include coordination and maintenance of the Field Center yearly budget, collecting and distributing mail, answering phone calls and voicemail as necessary, ordering and stocking supplies, managing accounts payable, and managing the weekly time sheets for hourly employees. Will be responsible for lawn mowing, snow removal, maintenance of walking trails and stone driveway, monitoring and maintaining fire alarms and fire extinguishers, repairing plumbing, changing light bulbs and ballasts as necessary, cleaning A/C units, and servicing equipment including a plow, tractor, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, a 150KVA standby generator, and a pickup truck. The Field Research Center Manager will maintain licenses and prepare for inspections by AAALAC, NYS Dept. of Health for Use of Living Animals License and Radioactive Materials License, NYS DEC, OSHA, and Duchess County Dept. of Health. Will prepare for Lab Safety inspections and coordinate waste pickup of hazardous materials. Will send monthly Public Water Supply operations reports for two wells and coordinate water tests. Will maintain the Millbrook operating checkbook account, maintain service contracts and keep records, and provide emergency response to severe weather events.
High School or Trade School required. Must have proven experience as facilities manager and be well-versed in technical/engineering operations and facilities management best practices. Must be able to read and understand complex electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems. Knowledge of basic accounting and finance principles required. Must have working knowledge of electrical, mechanical and HVAC systems. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as demonstrated leadership and project management skills.
Must be able to move, push, pull, or lift equipment, materials, and tools weighing more than 50 lbs., climb extension ladders, work overhead, and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and move within confined areas. Must be able to sustain considerable physical effort at frequent intervals, work both inside and outside, and operate power tools and equipment. May be required to work evenings, weekends, or holidays when necessary.
