Laboratory / Department Plant Operations
Plant Operations offers comprehensive services at The Rockefeller University including a full range of building trades services which are responsible for routine maintenance and minor/major space alterations, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC, grounds maintenance, locksmith, custodial, moving and setup services.
Under the supervision of the Manager of Custodial Services, the Custodial Group Leader will supervise a small group of individuals in a variety of cleaning, sanitation, and moving tasks in order to maintain a safe and clean campus. Will train new employees in proper custodial procedures for the use of manually operated tools, electrically-powered machines, cleaning compounds, solvents, and chemicals. The Custodial Group Leader will also perform all of the cleaning, sanitation and moving tasks individually. Will issue all supplies to the custodial staff, maintain inventory, issue keys, sweep, dust, mop, vacuum, scrub, strip, collect trash, shovel, and perform all other duties as assigned. Will be responsible for event and meeting set up and break down, and emergency response including extreme weather conditions.
High School diploma or equivalent required. Must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in custodial services, as well as knowledge of cleaning procedures, equipment and supplies. Must have strong oral and written communication skills, and the ability to train new employees. Must be able to coordinate activities involving faculty, staff, students and/or the general public. Strong interpersonal skills required. Fluency in Spanish highly desired. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
Must be able to inspect the cleanliness of facilities and areas that may only be accessible by climbing ladders or stairs, bending, reaching on top of partitions, cabinets, bookcases and ledges, moving furniture, supplies, or equipment. Must be able to move throughout assigned areas, as work is performed indoors and out-of-doors. Must be able to lift and carry custodial supplies and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis. Must have a full range of physical motion in order to operate manual and electrically-powered cleaning equipment and machines to include snow shovels. Will be designated as an essential employee and must report to work as scheduled when University offices and laboratories are limited due to severe weather.
