Department Description

The Rockefeller University's Child and Family Center (CFC) is centrally located on our beautiful 16-acre campus. The CFC offers childcare and education to families affiliated with the University. Our families reflect the multicultural dimension of science, and come from all over the world to study and work at Rockefeller. We have as many as 26 different languages represented in our diverse student body. Our teaching staff is also multinational and many of our teachers are bi-lingual.

Detailed Description

In cooperation with other team members, the Head Teacher will establish and maintain a safe and healthy learning environment for children, teachers, and parents. Responsibilities include setting an organizational and emotional tone for the room that is responsive to children, parents, and teachers, assessing the educational and developmental needs of each child, planning and implementing a curriculum that will enhance the development of the children in all areas (cognitive, physical, social, emotional), with an awareness of the needs of each child, promoting positive and productive relationships with parents, between parents, and between parents and other staff, and educating and supporting parents as necessary. If possible, the Head Teacher will incorporate into the curriculum education and support of parents made necessary by the concurrent developmental shifts experienced by them and will approach issues and problems professionally and self-reflectively, working cooperatively with colleagues. Will attend staff meetings, professional conferences, and engage in ongoing staff development for self, team, and others.

Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree and Master's degree in progress required; educational emphasis in early childhood education and/or childhood development preferred. Must have an understanding of child and adult development, strong verbal and written communication skills, interest in and knowledge of early childhood education curriculum, ability to work collaboratively with a team, good organizational and management skills, flexibility, and a sense of humor.

Additional Details

Must be able to engage in a full range of motion, to stand and walk for extended periods, bending, pushing, pulling, squatting, climbing, running, getting up and down from the floor with ease, walking on even and uneven surfaces. Must be able to lift, hold, and carry up to 50 pounds. Must be able to reach above the shoulders, have corrected hearing and vision to normal range, as well as hand grasping, touching, manual dexterity and hand-eye control. Must be able to perform diaper changes, and fully participate in classroom activities. Must be able to supervise and interact with children outdoors for extended periods in variable weather conditions. Work environment includes art materials, disinfecting solutions, noise, dirt/dust, fumes/odors, temperature changes, potential exposure to children or adults who are ill or contagious and is subject to unpredictable situations/emergencies.
