Rockefeller University Laboratory Manager, Metabolic Regulation and Genetics in New York, New York
Job Title Laboratory Manager, Metabolic Regulation and Genetics
Laboratory / Department Metabolic Regulation and Genetics
Our lab studies how metabolic pathways regulate biological processes and contribute to diseases including cancer, mitochondrial disorders, and inborn errors of metabolism. Using genetic and metabolomic tools, we study the mechanisms by which human cells alter their uptake and use of nutrients to adapt to these disorders' genetic and environmental stresses.
The Laboratory Manager will manage daily activities within a research team to identify and characterize genes in the regulatory nutrient pathways of cancer cells. The Laboratory Manager will ensure the operation of essential equipment, maintain adequate supplies for routine experimental procedures, perform tissue culture, and oversee junior research technicians performing general lab duties. Responsibilities also include regularly meeting with the Head of Laboratory and lab administrator to align goals for the entire laboratory, and collaboratively and independently determine processes required to achieve those goals. Will develop and refine online laboratory guidelines, protocols, inventory systems, and other lab organization tools to sustain a highly organized, functioning lab. The Laboratory Manager will liaise with vendors and other university departments to promptly attend to any existing and new lab-operation issues. Will conduct research projects as assigned and evaluate new techniques, technology, reagents, and supplies for higher efficiency and performance while minimizing the costs.
Master's degree in science or Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 2 years of full-time experience in a research laboratory required. Previous experience managing personnel in a scientific environment highly desirable. Must be able to perform molecular biology and biochemistry techniques with no or little guidance, including aseptic techniques/tissue culture, basic cloning, transfection of mammalian cells, RNA/DNA extractions, maxi, midi, and minipreps. Knowledge and experience with general laboratory equipment and materials required. Experience or interest in handling laboratory animals a plus. Must have strong interpersonal skills, respect, and a positive demeanor to build trust and lead the team when necessary. Must have the ability to work independently and collaboratively, a strong work ethic, motivation, curiosity, and enthusiasm to perform beyond the given tasks and responsibilities. Proficiency with standard software such as MS Office, Acrobat, and Photoshop/Illustrator required.
