Plant Operations offers comprehensive services at The Rockefeller University including a full range of building trades services which are responsible for routine maintenance and minor/major space alterations, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC, grounds maintenance, locksmith, custodial, moving and setup services.
Under the direction of engineering management and the Lead Mechanic, the Mechanic I will operate and maintain the physical plant and University buildings to ensure a safe and efficient environment and continually work towards and support the improvement of engineering services. Will evaluate problems with equipment, plan repairs and modifications to equipment, locate original or alternate parts to be used in response to emergency situations, and switch to back-up equipment or shutting down equipment as conditions warrant. Will operate as an independent mechanic by analyzing problems, collecting data, identifying courses of action, and implementing solutions to a high degree of quality. Will complete all work and assignments in a safe and professional manner, maintain communication with supervisors to ensure that all needed materials, tools, and supplies are available, and keep supervisors updated on assignments. Will keep accurate records of temperatures, loads, steam pressure and flow, and water analysis, read and interpret readings from meters, gauges, and other measuring units, and maintain a thorough log of each day's activities and problems that occur and to ensure this information is passed on to other shifts. Will maintain constant attention to overall operations of the physical plant and University buildings, assist other maintenance and engineering personnel when necessary in the completion of projects and repairs, respond to emergency calls for systems and equipment failure, and perform additional duties requested by the Chief/Assistant Chief Engineer and Watch Engineer in order to ensure the effective and efficient operation of the physical plant and University buildings.
High School Diploma or equivalent or trade school graduate required. Must have a minimum of eight to ten years of working experience in Power Plant operations and preventative maintenance for a wide range of equipment and utility systems, including but not limited to boilers and auxiliaries, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC equipment as well as air handlers, domestic water, chilled water, hot water, steam, building exhaust, compressed air, controls, lighting, fire systems, etc. Three years of experience will be credited for a N.Y.C. Refrigeration license. Must be familiar with lubrication and other corrective and preventative maintenance needed repairs, be available for any emergencies and act in an engineering capacity to protect and preserve the physical plant and University buildings and its systems during an emergency, and act quickly and responsibly as possible to return the facility to its normal operating status. Ability to speak, read, write, and communicate with individuals at all levels, both inside and outside the department effectively, carry out specific oral and written instructions, prioritize and organize work assignments, learn new tasks, coordinate, observe, make decisions, and meet deadlines in a detailed-oriented manner, and work independently without supervision required. Must be able to work under stressful circumstances at times and be a clear thinker in pressure situations and exercise good judgment.
Must be able to work in confined spaces and elevated temperatures, meet established attendance standards, and have the ability to work on ladders, scaffolds, and to sit, stand, and walk for momentary to extended periods of time. Must have the ability to work safely with hazardous materials. Will be required to work as necessary during disaster situations (before, during, or after a disaster) and may be required to stay after workday to assist after a disaster situation until relief arrives. Must be able to move, push, pull, or lift equipment, materials, and tools weighing more than 50 lbs., climb extension ladders, work overhead, and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and move within confined areas including crawl and attic spaces. Must be able to sustain considerable physical effort at frequent intervals, work both inside and outside, and operate power tools and equipment. Will be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays when necessary.
