Laboratory / Department Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience
The Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience studies the molecular defects responsible for neurological and psychiatric disorders including Alzheimer's disease, major depressive disorder, Parkinson's disease, and obsessive compulsive disorder, as well as the molecular mechanisms by which neuro- and psychoactive drugs produce their pharmacological actions in these disorders. Research from the laboratory has demonstrated that most neurotransmitters and neuromodulators achieve their actions and interactions on post-synaptic neurons through a process called "slow synaptic transmission." This process involves activation of highly complex signal transduction cascades. For the last 10 years, the group has applied this knowledge and developed a state-of-the-art methodologies (eg. BacTRAP), to the study of the molecular pathways behind various neurological and psychiatric disorders.
Using cellular and animal models, the Research Assistant will assist a Senior Research Associate by performing experiments aimed at investigating neuronal vulnerability in Alzheimer's Disease. Will perform experiments using brain sectioning, immunohistochemistry, stereotaxic injections, ELISA, Western blotting, cell culture, plasmid purification, PCR, and mouse genotyping. Will also be responsible for routine lab maintenance, set-up and operation of various scientific apparatus and compiling, processing, and analyzing data.
Bachelor's degree in science required; educational emphasis in molecular biology, cellular biology or neuroscience preferred. Must have knowledge of laboratory procedures and proficiency in at least some of the following techniques: PCR, Western blot, cell culture, brain sectioning/staining, and molecular biology. Willingness to work with small animals, strong communication skills, and attention to detail is necessary.
