Rockefeller University Research Support Specialist in New York, New York

Job Title Research Support Specialist

Laboratory / Department Proteomics Resource Center

Department Description

The Proteomics Resource Center at The Rockefeller University offers analysis and synthesis of biomolecules for The Rockefeller University community on a subsidized, cost-recovery basis. The Center is also available to other academic institutions. Though the main focus is identification of proteins and peptides using mass spectrometry based proteomics, the analysis of other biomolecular compounds - for example metabolites and drugs - are within the scope of the Proteomics Resource Center. Peptide synthesis is also offered by the Center. The peptide synthesis laboratory synthesizes single peptides with or without modifications and/or stable isotope labeled residues, as well as peptides for arrays. Basic research within the Center is performed to further the development of methodologies for micro analytical techniques and biopolymer synthesis. The goal is to extend the limits of sensitivity and broaden the range of services provided to investigators.

Detailed Description

Reporting to the Director of the Proteomics Resource Center, the Research Support Specialist will join the new Metabolomics Platform at the Proteomics Resource Center (PRC). The Center is equipped with one GC-MS and one Q-Exactive Plus fully dedicated to the Metabolomics Platform together with SkyLine, LipidSearch and Compound Discoverer data analysis software. The Research Support Specialist will be responsible for analyzing targeted as well as untargeted metabolomics and lipidomics projects using GC-MS and LC-MS/MS in close collaboration with leading labs on campus. Responsibilities include maintaining and operating high-flow LC-MS/MS (Q-Exactive Plus), GCMS (Agilent Intuvo), and related equipment, managing a compound library, interacting with and advising investigators with regard to experiments, developing and implementing metabolomics related protocols in the Center, processing, analyzing, and interpreting data and reporting findings to investigators and the Director, generating standard operating procedures, tracking and submitting billing and purchasing information, and monitoring and maintaining laboratory appearance.

Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree in science required; Master's degree or Ph.D. and educational emphasis in analytical chemistry applied to small molecules preferred. Must have strong analytical and practical skills in protein sample preparation, LC-MS, GCMS, and data analysis and interpretation, excellent communication skills in oral and written English, and ability to work independently as well as part of a team, and flexibility to interact with a diverse group of researchers. In-depth experience with liquid chromatography mass spectrometry based small molecule analysis, hands-on experience with mass spectrometry, preferably Orbitrap type instruments, and in-depth knowledge of instrument operation and maintenance, data interpretation, and knowledge of background literature necessary. Practical experience with informatics is desirable. Ability to maintain and expand knowledge of mass spectrometry techniques through self-education, dialog with other experts, reading literature, and attending conferences and courses as necessary.
