Detailed Description

We seek a gifted, thoughtful and creative writer and editor for a full-time position in the Office of Communications and Public Affairs (CPA).The Science Writer/Editor will write news and magazine stories about bioscience discoveries made in Rockefeller labs and help shape stories created by other writers. Working closely with other members of the CPA team, the Science Writer/Editor will research, pitch, and refine story ideas, create polished and engaging copy, line edit and fact check a wide range of content and help ensure that our digital and print publications meet the high standards of the office and university. The Science Writer will also work proactively to help raise the university's profile and grow our audiences in the digital space. Responsibilities will include reporting on scientific discoveries across a broad spectrum of bioscience disciplines, editing content for audience, flow, consistency, tone, brevity, and accuracy, contributing content to Rockefeller's flagship publications including its magazine Seek and its annual report; as well as to the university's website, social media channels, community newsletter, and special projects. Will develop and maintain working relationships with faculty members and stay abreast of their ongoing work and newsworthy publications, interview scientists and cover campus events such as scientific lectures, develop and execute content strategy across multiple platforms with the goal of promoting Rockefeller University's mission and growing our digital audiences, work with outside firms and CPA team members to produce multimedia content such as video and photography, and proofread fact check, and perform administrative tasks as needed.

Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field, or the biological sciences. Master's degree or equivalent work experience is a plus as is knowledge of UX and SEO best practices and video-editing. A minimum of five years of experience writing about biomedical research for lay audiences in a communications, journalism or PR setting and a minimum of two to three years of professional editing experience and strong copy-editing skills required. Must have a self-starter mindset, work independently to produce concise, polished, lively and accurate copy under tight deadlines and education, background or strong interest in bioscience. Must have the ability to work with highly technical and intellectually demanding material and have strong organizational skills and high attentiveness detail and accuracy. Excellent editorial judgement, diplomacy and interpersonal skills required.
