Organization Overview

The Comparative Bioscience Center provides a comprehensive program of animal care in support of the University's in vivo research. The goal of our staff is to provide investigators with the highest level of research support at the lowest cost while ensuring the welfare of the animals used in the research. The center is fully accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC)

Overview

The Veterinary Services Assistant will assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians with exams, procedures and sample collection; preparing, providing and documenting enrichment for multiple species.

Responsibilities

Major responsibilities include:

  • Regular communication with veterinary technicians, veterinarians, scientists and animal husbandry staff;

  • Specialized handling and restraint of all species;

  • performing in-house diagnostic tests;

  • scheduling and maintaining of veterinary equipment;

  • preparing samples for outside reference labs;

  • preparing medications; administration of treatments as pertains to a NYS non-licensed technician;

  • performing regular health screenings of sentinel and quarantine species;

  • conducting inventory of supplies, restocking and notifying/ordering stock shortages;

  • maintaining surgical instruments, sterile supplies and special equipment;

  • procedure set up and clean up; maintaining rooms;

  • recording and invoicing of supplies, administrative/clerical support, equipment and dispensing medications;

  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The candidate should be a positive and flexible individual who can adapt to a dynamic work environment and work successfully as part of a team while working with a broad variety of species. Must be able to follow established standard operating protocols, communicate concisely and effectively, and work independently and proactively. Must have excellent organizational skills and have an acute attention to details.

Previous veterinary or research animal experience preferred. Basic computer skills, knowledge of Excel, Outlook, and Word.

May be required to work weekends and some holidays. Various minor responsibilities may also be assigned and can vary based upon personal interests, vivarium room round assignments, or departmental needs.
